The cannabis industry is often labeled as the fastest growing industry in the world. When you think of different jobs in the cannabis industry, you think of growers, budtenders, trimmers, product manufactures, so most would assume those were the most in demand jobs. What if I told you the most in demand job right now is neither one of these job titles. In fact the most in demand job in the industry is sales.
Last month in June, we saw 822 job openings in the cannabis industry. Forty one percent of those jobs came from California, where according to the ArcView Market Report has 49% of the entire U.S. cannabis market. Most of these 822 jobs were openings for a sales position. A whopping 29% of all job opening are for sales positions. So it’s safe to say the easiest way to get in the cannabis industry is applying for the many sales positions available.
However, sales experience may not be enough to get a job in the industry, there are over 200 applicants per job posting, its going to take more than sales experience to get your foot in the door. According to Matt Jones, founder and CEO at THC University and the Cannabis Jobs Board, “Their are thousands of people who have sales experience, but those who stand out are the applicants who can demonstrate they know everything about cannabis as well”. Most of the sales jobs being offered are B2B, so it makes sense companies are looking for sales representatives who can talk about cannabis and build a relationship with other companies.
This shouldn’t be a huge surprise, sales jobs dominate a lot of industries and the cannabis industry isn’t much different. The cannabis industry is different in the sense that it is so new, and limited. Since the market is the smallest it will ever be, companies are doing everything they can to come out on top, and that means building massive sales teams and acquire as many clients and users as possible.
