One device that has seemingly revolutionized the smoking industry in the last decade is under major scrutiny as tragic accidents have started to pop up around the country. E cigarettes and vape pens have been exploding in popularity ever since their release. Unfortunately it seems that they might be actually exploding in some users’ hands as well. While many people think of vaping as a safe alternative to smoking apparently there are some pretty real risks that most people don’t know about. The batteries of these devices have had some occasional malfunctions that have ended in some gruesome injuries. One person who seems to have the worst complications from one of these incidents is Cordero Caples, of Colorado Springs.
Cordero is finally back at his home after spending 10 days in a hospital in Colorado Springs. The 29 year old had an E cigarette blow up in his face. The explosion was severe enough to cause him to suffer a broken neck, facial fractures, shattered teeth, and burns to his face and mouth. Worst of all is that he’s still having a hard time moving and they aren’t sure how much range of motion he’ll end up having. This could tragically end his career as a car detailer. Another young Colorado man is recovering in the area from a battery that burnt his leg so bad that he required skin grafts. The 19 year old had the battery in his pocket when it caught his pants on fire. These incidents might be rare, but the public definitely needs to know about the possible risks and the best ways to avoid them.
“The batteries are to blame as they contain a very flammable fluid that could potentially be ignited by an overheated battery.”
Apparently there have been 25 incidents and fires reported in the last few years that were caused by E cigarettes around the country. The batteries are to blame as they contain a very flammable fluid that could potentially be ignited by an overheated battery. These issues are usually caused by a person using the wrong charger with their battery, but can also happen because the battery is pressed up against change in a person’s pocket. These issues are even more likely to happen because of the shape and design that most of these devices have. They are somewhat prone to exploding violently because of their rocket like shape. A woman in California won nearly 2 million dollars in a lawsuit regarding burns she received from one of the batteries.
While not all of these incidents actually involved E cigarettes that could be used for cannabis products, many of the cartridges that are so popular utilize virtually identical batteries. The technology is very similar, but there are many different brands with different levels quality. This might motivate more people to invest in the nicer brands that can be trusted for their award winning products. For now the risk seems to be relatively low, but it is definitely something to keep in mind next time you decide which vape pen you’re going to purchase. Hopefully as technology continues to improve in this area the risks will virtually disappear.
